Christian Utz studied composition, piano, and music theory in Vienna and Karlsruhe, and participated in masterclasses with Mauricio Kagel and Luca Francesconi. He attended the Darmstadt Summer Courses (1992), the GRM Seminar in Paris (1994), the Heinrich-Strobel Stiftung in Freiburg (1994), the IRCAM Summer Academy (1995) and Royaumont Voix Nouvelles (1998). Also in 1998, he received a publicly-funded grant for composition, and the following year, was awarded a residency at Künstlerhof Schreyahn (Germany). Notable works include Interjectionen and Apparition-Dissolution (both from 1997).
